SUPREME COURT VACANCIES: CJN EXCLUDES LAWYERS, SHORTLISTS 29 JUSTICES – DAILYTRUST PG. 7, NATION PG. 5, THISDAY PG. 6

The Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Justice Ibrahim Tanko Muhammad, has excluded lawyers, including seven Senior Advocates of Nigeria (SANs), from the six present or future vacancies at the Supreme Court. None of the 23 lawyers who heeded the CJN’s January 19 invitation and applied for the job is on a 29-man provisional list seen by The Nation yesterday. The list, already sent by Justice Muhammad, who doubles as the Chairman of the Federal Judicial Service Commission (FJSC), to the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), was received by its Judiciary Committee Chairman, Dr. Babatunde Ajibade (SAN), on May 27.

RESPECT S/COURT JUDGMENT ON HIJAB, ISLAMIC STUDIES TEACHERS URGE SCHOOLS – DAILY TRUST PG 10

The Supreme Court had, on July 17, approved the wearing of hijab by female Muslim students to schools in Lagos State. The court rejected an appeal by the Lagos State Government and affirmed the earlier judgment by the Court of Appeal which ruled that the ban on hijab was discriminatory against Muslim students in the state. NATAIS, in a communiqué after its National Executive Committee meeting at Fountain University, Osogbo, Osun State, urged school managements to respect the rights of Muslim female students who choose to wear the hijab in schools.

Igwedum was arrested at the Lagos airport on Monday, June 20, upon his arrival on Ethiopian Airlines from Sao Paulo, Brazil via Addis Ababa. Spokesman of the agency, Femi Babafemi, said on Sunday in Abuja that preliminary investigations revealed the suspect had swallowed 50 wraps of cocaine before departing Brazil and excreted 48 pellets in Addis Ababa where he handed them over to another person. The suspect, however, claimed he was unable to excrete the remaining two wraps at the hotel room in Addis Ababa before boarding his flight but later excreted them in the aircraft restroom during the flight from Ethiopia to Lagos.
