A former Attorney-General of the Federation (AGF), Alhaji Abdullahi Ibrahim, is dead. He was 82.The late Ibrahim also served as Minister of Education and is the first Senior Advocate Advocate (SAN) of Igala extraction.

His protegee, Jibrin Okutepa (SAN), wrote in a social media post: “Death has just dealt a fatal blow to me, the entire legal profession, Nigeria and in particular the Igala nation. Today (yesterday), we lost Alhaji Abdullahi Ibrahim (SAN) to the cold hands of death.

Southwest governors and the leadership of Miyetti Allah are set to meet on Monday over Governor Oluwarotimi Akeredolu’s order to herdsmen to vacate forest reserves. Akeredolu had last Monday issued a seven-day ultimatum to herdsmen in the forest reserves to leave the area as part of measures to curb kidnappings and banditry.

Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) has urged Minister of Humanitarian Affairs, Disasters Management and Social Development, Hajia Sadiya Umar Farouq, to “publish details of proposed payments of N729 billion to 24.3 million poor Nigerians for six months”. The organisation called for the details in a Freedom of Information (FoI) request, dated January 23, 2021 and signed by its Deputy Director Kolawole Oluwadare.

Access Bank Plc has filed a Notice of Appeal at the Supreme Court, objecting to last Friday’s Court of Appeal suspension of a Mareva injunction on the assets of Seplat Petroleum Development Company. The bank asked the apex court to restore the interim injunction of last November 23, which froze Seplat’s accounts and sealed its offices over alleged $85.8 million legacy debt.

PDP TO BIDEN: SANCTION CORRUPT OFFICIALS, PARTY OFFICIALS FOR ALLEGED VIOLATIONS – NATION PG.8

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has called on President Joe Biden to sanction some government officials and leaders of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) for alleged corruption, criminal infractions and human rights violations. In a statement on Sunday by its spokesman Kola Ologbondiyan, the party accused the unnamed officials of patronising terrorists and undermining the nation’s democracy.

Residents of Igangan in the Ibarapa area of Oyo State on Sunday recounted their ordeals in the hands of Fulani herdsmen. The community leaders, who spoke during a visit of the state government delegation to the town, stated that they had paid a total of N50m as ransoms for kidnappings carried out by herdsmen in the community.

Human rights lawyer, Mr Femi Falana (SAN), says the order by the Ondo State Governor, Rotimi Akeredolu, that herdsmen should leave forest reserves within seven days is legal. In a statement on Sunday, Falana said the order was in tandem with Section 42 (1) (e) and (g) of the Forestry Law of Ondo State which provided that whoever in any forest reserve, except with the authority in writing of the prescribed officer, digs, cuts, turns or cultivates the soil or makes a farm or plantation; pastures cattle or permits cattle to trespass or trespasses in any part of forest reserves in which trespass shall be prohibited by an order of the governor.

DISQUIET OVER NOMINATION OF JUDGES INTO APPEAL COURT – THISDAY PG.44

There is unease in the Nigerian judiciary over the alleged lack o transparency in the latest selection of some justices into Court of Appeal, Newsmen learnt yesterday. Already, some concerned judicial officials as well as aggrieved persons, are calling for the immediate cancellation of the appointment of justices into the Court of Appeal conducted by the Federal Judicial Service Commission (FJSC).
