AGF urged to probe takeover of trial without investigation

The Human Rights Monitoring Agenda (HURMA) yesterday urged the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Prince Lateef Fagbemi (SAN), to probe the takeover of a case by his office without investigation.

The group accused some unnamed officials in the Office of the AGF of engaging in the trial of some persons without investigation by the police.

HURMA also called for an investigation of the procedure through which Oladayo Ogungbe obtained a fiat to prosecute the defendants.

President of the Nigerian Association of Chambers of Commerce, Industry, Mines and Agriculture (NACCIMA), Hon. Dele Kelvin Oye, has commended the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Mr. Lateef Fagbemi (SAN), for the diligent prosecution of the P&ID arbitration case, which resulted in a favourable ruling for Nigeria.

Oye made the commendation during his recent courtesy visit to Fagbemi.
The NACCIMA president stated that the favourable ruling was a landmark achievement that bolstered confidence in Nigeria’s legal system.
He stated, “The victory in the P&ID case has demonstrated Nigeria’s commitment to upholding the rule of law and protecting the interests of the nation.
“This achievement, coupled with the ongoing efforts to reform and strengthen our legal system, sends a clear message to the international community that Nigeria is a viable and trustworthy destination for investment.”

The visit was described as a testament to NACCIMA’s recognition of the crucial role played by the Office of the Attorney General of the Federation in improving the investment climate and upholding the rule of law in Nigeria.

Bobrisky: NCoS awaits investigation outcome, clarifies inmate admission process

The Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) has confirmed an ongoing investigation into allegations surrounding convicted cross-dresser, Idris Okuneye, also known as Bobrisky’s accommodation, with findings pending.

Abubakar Umar, Deputy Controller of Corrections (DCC) Service Public Relations Officer (SPRO) disclosed this in an interview with Newsmen on Sunday in Abuja.

Umar also highlighted the service’s commitment to rehabilitation and safety through its comprehensive inmate admission process

 Bobrisky was convicted for mutilating the naira in April and was sentenced to six months in jail.

NAN also reports that Mr Vincent Otse, a social media influencer and human rights activist known as Very Dark Man (VDM) published an audio recording that captured Bobrisky allegedly saying that he spent his jail term in a private apartment.

Criminal Justice: Stakeholders Adopt National Minimum Uniform Standards

Stakeholders in the justice sector have adopted the National Minimum Standards Document 2024 on the implementation of the Administration of Criminal Justice Act (ACJA), 2015.

The stakeholders which include the Federal Ministry of Justice, International Institute for Democracy and Electoral Assistance (International IDEA), and the European Union have also taking significant steps to ensure uniformity in the implementation of the ACJA, 2015.

This was the outcome of the three-day stakeholders’ meeting for the inauguration of the Committee for the Review and Validation of the National Minimum Standards documents on the implementation of the ACJA.

Lawyer urges AGF to uphold professionalism

Human rights lawyer, Mr. Lekan Alabi, who is also member of the Human Rights Monitoring Agenda (HURMA), a civil society group, has urged the Attorney General of the Federation (AGF)  and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi , as a matter of urgency, to investigate officials of his ministry and fish out lawyers who might be using the office for crooked business.

Alabi made this call after a lawyer who claimed to be from the office of the AGF told him that he had a flat to try Alabi’s seven clients in court.

Alabi said he was surprised, especially since the case involving the clients, identified as Mohammed Yahaya, Abdul –Hakeem Mudathir Kewudirorun, Yusuf Olatunde Adepoju, Mubarak Adepoju, Tunde Badmus, Adelakun Gideon and Abdul-Rasaz Akinola, was yet to be investigated.
