EX-GOV ATTAH SLAMS MALAMI WITH N1.5BN DEFAMATION SUIT – PUNCH PG.9

A former Governor of Akwa Ibom State, Victor Attah, has instituted N1.5bn defamation suit against the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami, accusing him of damaging his reputation. In the suit, now pending before Justice Emeka Nwite of the Federal High in Abuja, filed by his lawyer, Reuben Atabo, Attah claimed that Malami, in 2016, named him among some ex-governors to be prosecuted by the National Prosecution Coordination Committee for alleged corruption. Attah, in his witness statement, stated that as a result of the pronouncement by the AGF which was published in the media, the Specialist Crimes Directorate and the Metropolitan Police of the United Kingdom placed him on their watch list of corrupt governors of Nigeria facing corruption charges.

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has arrested a notorious female cross-border drug trafficker in Taraba State.A Spokesman of the Agency Femi Babafemi said in a statement yesterday that Lami Mai Rigima was on wanted list for months. Babafemi said she was known for supplying psychoactive substances to traffickers in the state. He said, “The 40-year-old queen of the drug world came under the anti-narcotic agency’s searchlight when a number of traffickers arrested in the state in 2021 and early this year fingered her as their supplier. The manhunt for Lami paid off on Monday 4th April when operatives tracked her to her hideout in Iware village in Ardo Kola local government area of Taraba.

EFCC GETS NOD TO PROBE OIL FIRM, MD OVER UNEXPLAINED $38M PAYMENT – THE NATION PG.3

A Federal High Court in Abuja has dismissed a suit filed by an oil and gas services firm, Marine Assets and Offshore EquipMent Limited, and its General Manager, Olusegun Olaleye, seeking to stop their investigation by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC). In a judgment on Tuesday, Justice Bolaji Olajuwon, held that there was no merit in the case that sought to restrain the EFCC from investigating the payment of huge sums into the plaintiffs’ bank account by some firms for unknown reasons. Justice Olajuwon disagreed with lawyer to the plaintiffs, Mike Ozekhome (SAN), that the investigation into the plaintiffs’ activities by the EFCC amounted to harassment and ultra vires its (EFCC’s) powers.
