LAWYER: MALAMI WRONG OVER EX PARTE ORDER ON ENERGY FIRM – THE NATION PG.20, THISDAY PG.5

Abuja-based lawyer Ahmed Abdullahi has faulted a claim by Federal Attorney-General Mr. Abubakar Malami on an order made by Federal High Court, Abuja, in favour of embattled Managing Director of Benin Electricity Distribution Company (BEDC) Funke Osibodu. Abdullahi said Malami’s view that Osibodu was acting illegally by refusing to vacate office on the strength of the order, which, in Malami’s view, had expired, was inconsistent with the law. Malami spoke in a statement in Benin. He said the restraining order was of no more effect because the 14 days granted by the court had expired.

The judiciary came under scrutiny yesterday for its role in allowing corruption and money laundering to fester. Chairman of the Independent Corrupt Practices and other Related Offences Commission (ICPC), Prof Bolaji Owasanoye (SAN), also lashed lawyers for aiding money laundering and abetting graft. He said judges grant injunctions that restrain anti-graft agencies from doing their jobs while indulging lawyers who bring lawyers who bring such applications.

The Economic and Financial Crimes commission (EFCC) yesterday interrogated the Director, Finance and Account, Niger Delta Development Commission (NDCC), Eno Ubi Otu, over alleged diversion of N25 billion tax remittances. Otu was said to have been arrested on Wednesday by the anti-graft agency’s detectives at 11:15am. An EFCC official, told Daily Trust that the NDCC official was still with the operatives as of last night.

Operatives of the Itelligence Response Team attached to the Force Intelligence Bureau of the Nigeria Police force, have arrested criminals on allegations of kidnapping, armed robbery, culpable homicide and illegal escape from custody. The suspects were paraded at the FIB-IRT station in Abuja on Wednesday.

NBA-AGC: 62,000 PAY PRACTISING FEES, LAWYER DEMANDS ACJA IMPLEMENTATION – PUNCH PG.27

Outgoing President of the Nigerian bar Association, Olumide Akpata, has said no fewer than 62,000 lawyers  across the country paid their practising fees in 2022. Akpata said this during the 62nd edition of the NBA Annual General conference, whsich started on Monday to end on Friday (tomorrow). The event had some of Nigeria’s presidential candidates vying in the 2023 general elections sharing their plans for the country at one of its sessions, as well as award-winning Nigerian novelist, Chimamanda Adichie, as the keynote speaker. It is the last NBA-AGC that the NBA president will be attending as head of the regulatory body for the legal profession. This year’s NBA-AGC is themed ‘’Bold Transition’’.

NED NWOKO SUES GOVERNORS’ FORUM FOR LIBEL – THISDAY PG.36

Ned Nwoko one of the consultants in the infamous $418 million Paris Club refund has dragged the Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF) to court for defamation of character. He is demanding from the NGF the sum of $40 million for allegedly claiming that he had an issue that affects his status as practising lawyer with the British law society.
