NIGERIA MOVES TO AVERT ANOTHER P&ID SCAM – NATION PG.29

Attorney-general of the Federation (AGF) and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami, has set up a committee to work out how most contractual disputes can be arbitrated in the country.

The minister’s move followed the nation’s unsavoury experience in the controversial gas supply contract awarded to the Irish firm, Process and Industrial Development (P&ID).An arbitration tribunal that sat in London awarded over $9 billion against Nigeria in the P&ID case. Inaugurating the committee on Tuesday via a virtual meeting, Malami urged members of the National Arbitration Policy Committee (NAPC) to come out with a comprehensive policy that will, among other things, ensure that domestic transactions originating and terminating in Nigeria are arbitrated in the country.

The President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari, (retd.), has sent an executive bill that would, among others, ensure the management of the funds and property confiscated from criminals. The proposed legislation titled, ‘Proceeds of Crime Bill,’ also seeks to address the problem of lack of transparency and accountability associated with the management of recovered funds by anti-corruption agencies in the country.

The Senate on Tuesday confirmed the nomination of eight Justices of the Court of Appeal for appointment as Justices of the Supreme Court of Nigeria. The confirmation of the nominees was sequel to the consideration of the report of the Senate Committee on Judiciary, Human Rights and Legal Matters, chaired by Senator Opeyemi Bamidele (APC, Ekiti).

FG REJECTS DEBT RELIEF OFFER – DAILY TRUST PG.3, NATION PG.1&5

The Federal Government has rejected debt relief entreaties by the World Bank. The Minister of Finance, Budget and National Planning, Zainab Ahmed, explained that accepting the offer might trigger the incident of default by some of the lenders. She spoke in Abuja on Tuesday during the virtual public presentation of 2021 budget proposal.

IGP CREATES SWAT TO REPLACE SARS – NATION PG.1&4, DAILY TRUST PG.4, SUN PG.6&7, THISDAY PG.1&8

The Inspector General of Police Mohammed Adamu has created a new unit to replace the disbanded Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS). A statement by the Force Public Relations Officer, DCP Frank Mba said the new unit is named Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) Team. The unit, he said, will fill the gaps arising from the dissolution of the defunct SARS.

FIFTH WITNESS TESTIFIES AGAINST WADUME AS TRIAL RESUMES – PUNCH PG.9, SUN PG.5

THE trial of the alleged Taraba State kidnap kingpin, Hamisu Bala, otherwise known as Wadume, resumed at the Federal High Court in Abuja on Tuesday. The fifth prosecution witness, Bala James, an Assistant Superintendent of Police, who earlier testified on July 15, 2020, was cross-examined by some of the defence lawyers at Tuesday’s proceedings.
